Profile
Rick is involved in all aspects of intellectual property law, with a focus on the preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications in the United States and foreign countries. He represents large and small clients from a diverse range of industries, and often works directly with in-house counsel to develop and maintain their worldwide patent and trademark portfolios. His patent practice includes utility and design patents, appeals to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Board of Appeals and Interferences, and reexamination proceedings. His trademark practice includes a full range of services including searching, clearance, opinions, licensing and representing clients before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is a former equity shareholder and member of the board of directors of a major Salt Lake City-based Intellectual Property law firm.
Rick is a frequent speaker on patent and trademark matters. He speaks each year at the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) Annual Trademark Boot Camp on “Developing a Filing Strategy” and “Trademark Searching – Preparing for and ordering Trademark Clearance search reports, analyzing search reports, and preparing opinions.” He has also taught many law school classes on patent and trademark issues.
Rick has published numerous articles on topics such as intellectual property due diligence for business transactions and how to protect and register trademarks. During law school, he was a member of the Utah Law Review and a Note and Comment Editor for the Journal of Contemporary Law. He has been recognized in Utah Business Magazine’s Top Lawyers Named By Their Peers section in both 2010 and 2011.
Rick is most at home in the water. He is a three-time all-American swimmer who competed on a national and international level, going head to head against the French, Mexican, Brazilian, New Zealand and Australian national swim teams. At one point in time, he was ranked as one of the top twenty-five swimmers in the world. When on dry land he enjoys golfing, skiing and running.
