Profile
Burns’s practice includes advising clients regarding corporate patent portfolio strategies and managing the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications. He has experience in patents in a range of technologies including computer software and hardware, consumer electronics devices, optics, telecommunications, and mechanical systems. He works with individual inventors, start-up companies and major national corporations as well as clients located outside of the United States in foreign countries. He is a former equity shareholder and former member of the board of directors of a major Salt Lake City-based IP law firm. He is also a former adjunct professor at the S. J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah and a former adjunct faculty member at the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University. He lectured at professional conferences including meetings of the Licensing Executives Society and the American Intellectual Property Law Association.
Burns is the proud father of four, a big fan of college basketball and a meteorology hobbyist who once measured an air temperature of -64 degrees in the mountains of Utah, a state record.
