Profile
John’s practice focuses primarily on the preparation and prosecution of U.S. patent applications in the software arts including database design, programming languages, object oriented programming, and web programming. His experience also includes work on patents dealing with communication devices, mechanical devices, and optics. In addition, he is experienced in preparing defensive opinions of non-infringement of patents and copyrights, patentability opinions, and patent invalidity opinions. He is a former non-equity shareholder of a major Salt Lake City-based IP law firm.
Prior to law school, he worked for three years as a software developer where he designed and developed custom web-enabled database applications.
He served as a Judicial Extern for the Honorable Kenneth F. Ripple of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and served as the Publication Manager of the Ave Maria Law Review. He graduated second in his law school class.
John loves a good adventure. When he was 16 he rode his bike from Yellowstone National Park to Salt Lake City alone and unassisted (~350 miles). He loves to hike, run marathons, fish and hunt. As a former Scout Master he led 73-mile hikes on The Great Western Trail and can start a campfire with a Fresnel lens he carries in his wallet. He is happily married and the father of six kids who keep him busy and happy.
